What ChatGPT says about your business, and how to check it

Save comparable answers, check cited public facts and repair the actual source before treating one ChatGPT reply as a visibility verdict.

For a founder who has seen an AI answer get the business wrong. Source guidance reviewed September 15, 2026.

If ChatGPT describes a service you do not sell, start with the answer and the public page it appears to rely on. Correct the source you control. Then repeat the same buying question under comparable conditions. One wrong answer is a useful lead for investigation; it is not proof that every buyer sees the same thing.

The useful question is not “How do we get mentioned more?” It is “Could a customer learn the right facts, check them, and take the right next step?” A mention with the wrong service, location or availability can send you the wrong enquiry.

Make a small, repeatable test

Choose four or five questions a real buyer might ask. Include both branded questions (“Does Northline Studio offer website maintenance?”) and unbranded ones (“Who can help a small manufacturer explain a new service?”). Keep questions about the decision, not prompts engineered to name your company. Ask them on dates you record. If the product shows a model, search mode or source links, record those too. Note the location you supplied or the location the answer assumes. Do not paste private customer information into a public chat to test visibility.

For each answer, separate three observations:

  1. Representation: Does it name the correct service, address/service area, hours, eligibility and next action?
  2. Source: What linked page, if any, supports the statement? Open the page. A citation to an outdated directory is a different problem from a wrong sentence on your own site.
  3. Action: If a person follows the link, can they actually call, book, enquire or read the detail promised in the answer?

An answer may have no visible source. Mark its origin unknown; do not guess that the model read a particular page. Save the answer and date so another reviewer can reproduce the observation.

Worked example: the service that ended last year

Illustrative company and observations, not a client result. Northline Studio used to provide monthly social posting. Today it sells positioning and website work, and its current service page says so. In one ChatGPT search answer, “Northline Studio offers social-media management” appears beside a link to a directory profile last edited two years ago.

Northline’s first move is not a new “AI-optimized” landing page. The owner checks the directory profile and the current service page. If the outdated profile is owner-editable, they replace its service description and link it to the present offer. They also check whether the website’s old `/social-management` page still resolves, redirects correctly, or tells a contradictory story. A week later, they rerun the recorded question and a second plain-language variant. If the wrong claim persists, the answer is still wrong; the correction was a source repair, not a guaranteed fix to ChatGPT. If the answer changes, keep the dated before/after and continue watching for qualified enquiries rather than claiming universal inclusion.

Check access without confusing search and training

OpenAI’s publisher guidance distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, which can access content for ChatGPT search summaries and links, from GPTBot, associated with potential model training. Permitting training is not a prerequisite for allowing search access. Check `robots.txt`, hosting and security rules for the specific public pages you want discoverable; ask your site owner before changing those rules. An allowed crawler does not promise a citation, a recommendation or a stable answer. Other sources and user-requested behavior can also affect what appears.

OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral links include `utm_source=chatgpt.com`. That can help identify some visits in analytics. It does not reveal who asked, what the private answer said, or every person who saw your name without clicking. A referral is not automatically a qualified lead.

Answer-audit worksheet

Use one row per question and observation. “Unknown” is a valid entry.

FieldWhat to record
Buyer questionThe exact words, branded or unbranded
Test conditionsDate, product/mode shown, supplied location and account context that may matter
AnswerExact relevant statement and any visible source URLs
Fact checkCorrect, incorrect or uncertain; link to the current business source
Customer pathWhat the linked page says and whether its next action works
Competing explanationOld directory, inaccessible current page, ambiguous offer, or unknown
Smallest correctionOwner, page/record, approved edit and date
RetestComparable question/date; did accuracy or cited source change?

Pick the first row with a clearly wrong fact and an identifiable source. Repair that source before producing ten new pages. If answers are accurate but inconsistent across a handful of tests, collect more comparable observations; changing the site on that evidence alone may be premature. If the real issue is a vague offer, fix the offer language for people first.

For the broader discovery question, read our AI visibility guide. For the customer path after a visit, use our website conversion guide. You can run the worksheet yourself. If you want a second pair of eyes, bring one saved answer and the page it cites to Brand Therapy; we can discuss what the evidence supports before suggesting work.

Questions

Why does ChatGPT describe my business incorrectly?
A dated or incomplete public source, inaccessible page, conflicting third-party description or unrepresentative test may be involved. Save the exact answer and citations before deciding which source to repair.
Does allowing OAI-SearchBot guarantee a ChatGPT mention?
No. OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as a crawler for ChatGPT search discovery and snippets, but access does not guarantee selection or a recommendation.
How do I measure whether an answer matters?
Compare a dated set of real buyer questions, factual accuracy, cited sources and any attributable referrals or qualified enquiries. Do not infer demand from one prompt.
