Make your evidence useful enough to cite

A citation is not an endorsement. Check whether a public page supports the exact claim, names its method and limits, and lets a reader act.

Michael Sebastian

Creative Director

For a business whose expertise is being quoted inaccurately or skipped in Perplexity. Source guidance reviewed September 15, 2026.

A Perplexity citation means the answer links to a page. It is not an endorsement of the business, confirmation that the quoted claim is right, or proof that the page won a customer. Open the cited page. If the answer turns a narrow finding into a broad promise, the useful fix may be better evidence and clearer limits, not a louder headline.

This guide is for the person who can edit or commission the source page and must decide whether to strengthen the evidence, correct retrieval, or do nothing yet.

Inspect the claim before the citation count

Save an actual buyer question, the answer, date and cited URLs. Ask what a reader would infer from the answer. Then inspect the source itself. Can you find the quoted point? Who made the claim? When? What was observed or measured? What was excluded? If two current sources disagree, show the disagreement rather than selecting the one that sounds best.

Use this four-part source check:

CheckStronger sourceRepair when missing
IdentityNamed author or responsible organization, publication/update dateAdd provenance and a meaningful review date
MethodWhat was compared, counted or inspectedState the sample and procedure plainly
BoundaryWhat the observation does not establishAdd exclusions, uncertainty and context
Customer useA clear answer and a relevant next actionExplain what a buyer should verify or ask next

A FAQ sentence can be useful, but an unsupported claim wrapped in FAQ markup is still unsupported. A long article may answer several related questions well. Splitting it into thin “one question per page” fragments is not a universal citation tactic.

Worked example: a narrow test made into a big claim

Fictional example and figures for the worksheet only. Ridgeway Components tested two label designs with eight existing distributors during a private review. Six found Design B easier to read on a printed sample. Its public page says, “Our labels improve purchasing decisions.” Perplexity cites that page while answering whether Ridgeway’s labels increase orders.

The citation is real in this imagined answer, but the claim outruns the test. Eight existing distributors assessing readability cannot establish an order increase. A useful source block would say:

What we tested: Two printed label layouts with eight existing distributors in a guided review. Six said Design B was easier to read. What we have not measured: purchasing behavior, conversion or performance among new buyers. Next check: run the approved label in the actual ordering context and compare comprehension before claiming a sales effect.

Ridgeway updates the existing page with that block, the review date and the person responsible. It does not create a new page titled “increase orders with labels.” On retest, the reviewer checks whether Perplexity’s answer describes readability accurately and whether it still invents purchasing effects. Even a better answer is a dated observation, not proof that the update caused it.

Check access narrowly

Perplexity’s crawler documentation distinguishes PerplexityBot, used to surface and link websites, from Perplexity-User, which may fetch a page in response to a user’s request. The latter generally ignores `robots.txt` for that user-requested fetch. Hosting or firewall rules can still interfere with access. Have the site owner inspect the actual public URL and relevant request logs before changing a rule. Do not disable a broad security control because one answer lacked a citation, and do not assume access alone earns a link.

If a cited page is old, update it in place when the question and URL still fit. If the page is technically reachable but the useful evidence lives only in an image, place the key facts in readable text too. If the evidence is not yours to publish, do not reverse-engineer a client result from internal notes; obtain permission or use a different, supportable example.

A source-and-answer decision card

Fill this once for the claim that matters most:

QuestionYour answer
What did the assistant actually say?Exact relevant sentence, date and link
What does the cited page establish?Quote or paraphrase with page section and method
What would a buyer wrongly conclude? The tempting unsupported leap
What source is missing or conflicting?Link, owner and date; or unknown
What is the smallest honest edit?A correction, method note, limitation, or no edit
What will you retest?Same question, comparable conditions, accuracy and citation

If the answer is accurate and the page already explains its limits, there may be no edit to make. Keep the observation. A citation audit cannot tell you Perplexity’s hidden selection weights or guarantee that a future answer will cite you.

Our AI visibility guide explains the broader representation problem while this worksheet stays with source quality. You can use the card without an agency. For an outside review, bring the exact claim and its public source to Brand Therapy; we will start with what the source can honestly support.

Questions

Is a Perplexity citation an endorsement?
No. It identifies a source linked in an answer. Read the page and check whether it actually supports the claim and decision.
Should I publish more pages to earn citations?
Not by default. Improve one page that contains a useful original claim, method, boundary and date before making thin variations of the same idea.
Can blocking PerplexityBot stop every fetch?
Perplexity documents PerplexityBot separately from Perplexity-User, which fetches pages for user requests. Inspect the specific access path and firewall behavior rather than assuming one robots rule covers all uses.
