Google AI answers: understand what changed before changing the site

A screenshot cannot prove the cause of a click drop. Check dated query groups, indexing, Search Console AI impressions and the site's inclusion setting.

For a business seeing fewer clicks or a different Google results page. Source guidance reviewed September 15, 2026.

Seeing an AI Overview above a result does not prove it caused a traffic change. Date the observation. Compare the affected questions, pages and devices with equivalent prior periods. Check indexing and measurement before rewriting the site. The decision is whether there is a real customer-information gap, a technical problem, a demand shift, or simply not enough evidence yet.

AI Overviews summarize some searches and show supporting links. AI Mode is a separate, more exploratory Google Search experience; its answer and sources can differ. Neither appears for every question. Google’s site-owner guidance says ordinary Search fundamentals remain the technical starting point: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link. Eligibility is not guaranteed appearance.

Capture the result, not a memory of it

Save the exact query, date, country/location, device, visible experience and linked pages. If the result says something inaccurate about your service, compare it with the page it links to. If your page is missing, do not immediately assume a crawl block; inspect the page’s indexing status and the results for related questions. Search Console’s URL Inspection can show the indexed status and test a live URL for a verified site owner.

The customer’s question matters more than the widget. An AI answer to “What is a website migration?” may satisfy an information need without sending a click. “Who can safely migrate our catalog?” is closer to a buying decision. Separate those query groups before making a commercial conclusion.

Worked example: the visible answer and the missing enquiry

Illustrative figures, not an 8GNC or client result. Harbor Tools sees organic clicks to its “replacement parts” explainer fall from 120 to 84 in one matched four-week comparison. Impressions remain near 1,000. A staff member screenshots an AI Overview for one of the explainer’s questions. The page is indexed; its current answer explains parts compatibility but never says which product lines Harbor actually supports.

The screenshot suggests one possible result-format explanation. It cannot establish that the Overview caused all 36 lost clicks: query demand, competing results, position, device mix and tracking may also have moved. Harbor checks the affected query group and devices in the Web Performance report, dates any site release, and checks whether other informational pages show the same pattern. It then improves the existing explainer with a plainly visible supported-product table and a route to the correct parts enquiry—not a page of “AI Overview keywords.” The team records whether buyers find the right part and whether enquiries fit. If clicks stay lower but relevant enquiries hold steady, the commercial outcome is different from the chart’s first impression.

Use the reports for what they actually measure

Google documents a worldwide August 31, 2026 rollout of its Generative AI performance report. It provides impressions for links appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, date and device. It does not by itself show who read the answer, clicks caused by that appearance, a buyer's question, or a separate conversion rate. A property with too little qualifying data may not display the report despite the rollout. These impressions are also included within the broader Web Performance data; do not add both totals as if they were independent audiences.

Before interpreting absence from those features, a verified site owner should also check the Search generative AI inclusion control under Search Console Settings. A property can include, exclude or inherit a parent setting. This controls participation in specified Search generative AI features; it is not a general ranking signal or an AI-training switch. Record the property and inherited setting before deciding whether the business wants inclusion.

Compare Web clicks and query/page trends separately, then compare genuine website actions in analytics or first-party enquiry records. If a report is unavailable or volume is small, say so. Search Console's data-anomalies record is worth checking when a chart moves suddenly. For example, Google records the May 2026 end of FAQ rich results; a disappearing FAQ appearance is not automatically a loss of ordinary search demand.

Google says no special AI markup, new machine-readable file or `llms.txt` is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Its 2026 update log says `llms.txt` has no positive or negative impact on Google Search visibility. Structured data should match visible page content where applicable; it is not a ticket into an answer. A reader who already has accurate indexed pages, working actions and no consequential gap may be better served by observing than editing.

Use our organic-traffic diagnosis for the broader visibility decision, and the website conversion guide for what happens after a visit. Or bring one dated query group and affected page to Brand Therapy. We can start with what changed, what did not, and what remains unknown.

Questions

Do I need special markup or llms.txt for Google's AI answers?
Google says no special AI markup or machine-readable file is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Start with accurate, indexed, snippet-eligible pages and the current Search Console inclusion setting.
Does Search Console show AI Overview clicks separately?
Google's Generative AI performance report provides impressions for supported Search generative AI features, with page, country, date and device dimensions. It is not a separate click or conversion report; broader Web data still includes these appearances.
Can I opt out of Search generative AI features?
A verified owner can inspect the Search generative AI control in Search Console Settings. Google documents include, exclude and inherited choices. The choice affects specified features, not general Search ranking or AI training.
