Hiring a Fractional CMO Won't Fix a Company That Can't Make Decisions.

Senior marketing leadership helps when the function lacks an owner. It fails when the company keeps outsourcing decisions only leadership can make.

Hiring a Fractional CMO Won't Fix a Company That Can't Make Decisions.

A fractional CMO walks in and asks a straightforward question:

Who are we trying to win?

The founder says enterprise. Sales says mid-market. Product says the new platform is for everybody. Finance says whoever closes fastest.

Then the company asks for a marketing plan.

Not a chance.

Marketing cannot settle company strategy by calendar invite

A good fractional CMO can set priorities, fix reporting, hire the team, choose channels, and stop random acts of marketing.

What they cannot do is make leadership agree on the business by quietly absorbing the argument into a campaign plan.

They can force the decision into the room. They can show what each option costs. They can recommend a direction.

Leadership still has to choose.

The title gets blamed for the missing mandate

The engagement starts with pipeline pressure. Three months later, the fractional CMO is refereeing product naming, rewriting the company story, negotiating sales promises, and approving the CEO's keynote.

That is not fractional marketing leadership anymore. That is company-level brand ownership without the authority or the title.

This is where good people get called ineffective. They were hired to run the market function and handed an unresolved company.

Write the decisions before you hire the person

List the decisions the role must own.

Budget and channel priorities? Team design? Pipeline targets? Campaign performance? A fractional CMO fits.

Portfolio strategy? What an acquisition becomes? Which product gets the company name? How the customer experience and culture carry the same promise? You are describing a Chief Brand Officer, a Brand Ops system, or a defined strategy engagement.

Maybe you need both eventually. You still need the order.

Buy the work before the title

Smaller companies often hire too high because the problem feels important.

An executive title is not a substitute for a clear assignment. If the company needs six months of senior marketing leadership to stabilize the function, say that. If it needs positioning and decision rights, build those. If it needs permanent company-wide ownership, then the seat may be real.

But stop asking one expensive person to be a workaround for five leaders who will not make the call.

Use the engagement path to diagnose the mandate before you write the job description.
